*URGENT ACTION ALERT: Deciding the Fate of Our Forest! *

The fate of our public forest is being determined right now! Two reports were released on August 27 – one is a menu of seven management options for our public forest and the other is a study done by a bank on global market opportunities for the forestry sector. The provincial government will be making decisions on new rules for how our public forest is managed by the end of this year. They will use these reports, and the comments they receive before *October 3* to make their decisions. The Conservation Council supports the more conservation-oriented options A and B found in the first report. These options add new protected areas and habitat conservation and old growth forest restoration measures while reducing clearcutting and capping plantations. Forest management must consider first and foremost adequate habitat for wildlife, protection for streams and rivers, climate change impacts and forest diversity in terms of age and species.
